Press Release on 19th NAM Mid-Term Ministerial Meeting

The leader of a Nepali delegation and Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations H.E. Mr. Lok Bahadur Thapa addressed the 19th Mid-Term Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held under the theme of “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence” in Kampala, the capital of the Republic of Uganda today.

In his address to the Ministerial Meeting, Ambassador Thapa highlighted multiple and interconnected global crises including conflicts, geopolitical competition, climate change, debt distress, economic and digital divides, growing youth unemployment and acknowledged NAM’s pivotal role for global peace, justice, human dignity and shared prosperity. He reaffirmed Nepal’s enduring commitments to the purposes and principles of the Non-aligned Movement.

While underscoring the relevance of NAM in amplifying collective voice of the Global South for climate justice, strengthened multilateralism and global governance reforms, Ambassador Thapa said, “The principles and purposes of NAM are not mere ideals — they are pragmatic pathways to address the root causes of today’s global challenges.” Reiterating Nepal’s abiding faith in multilateralism, non-alignment, global peace, solidarity and democratic values, he put the high-level delegation of NAM members, observer states as well as international organizations across Nepal’s impending general elections in March 2026 to renew democratic mandate of its sovereign people.

Speaking about the constraints faced by the developing countries like NAM members, Ambassador Thapa stressed the need to accelerate progress on the 2030 Agenda, implement the Compromiso de Sevilla to bridge gaps in development financing, and resolve conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.

“Equity, justice, and shared prosperity have long remained the aspirations of our people — especially in the Global South. Yet, turning these aspirations into reality remains a challenge,” he said, adding, “To achieve shared global affluence and shape a more peaceful, just, inclusive, and prosperous global order, we must strengthen solidarity, harmony, mutual understanding, cooperation, and collaboration among states.”

Mentioning about Nepal’s strong and continued advocacy for collective global action on climate change and resilience, Ambassador Thapa stressed the need to ensure scaled-up, predictable and accessible climate finance, debt relief, technology transfer, and capacity-building support to developing countries, particularly vulnerable and mountainous countries. During his address, he also recalled the holding of the first edition of the ‘Sagarmatha Sambaad’ in May 2025 in Kathmandu, echoing the call for climate justice and sustainable mountain development.

On the occasion, Ambassador Thapa reiterated Nepal’s strong and unwavering commitment to multilateralism, peacekeeping, and collective global responsibility. “As the largest troop-contributing country to the United Nations peacekeeping operations, Nepal considers its service a modest yet meaningful contribution to global peace and stability,” said he.

The Meeting concluded with the adoption of Kampala Declaration.
